I wanted Mika to have an early start in playschool because I believe the
structured learning environment would helped him better in his early learning
phase. And of course exposure to other children will be good for his social development.
Unfortunately I've discovered that most playschool in Kota Kinabalu only accepts
toddler age 2.5 and above. My Mika is about 1.9 year,
so I guess playschool have to wait for now.
I have however enrolled Mika in toddler music class with Musikgarten but the class
is only half an hour once a week. Too short!
So until Mika is of playschool age I will continue teaching him at home. I
have been teaching Mika since he was a baby, we read books, teach him the ABCs,
123s, colouring, etc. but it didn’t seem like
Mika was progressing much or perhaps mummy was a bad teacher *ops*. I’m also very concerned because Mika is becoming attached to the television and Ipad and it wasn't his fault - his parent is to be blamed (Mostly his dad hehe!). So I obviously needed a new approach, a new structure, a proper method to help me guide
Mika. I did some google’ing and that’s how I came across TOT
SCHOOL! I was so happy to discover that a lot of mothers out there are home-schooling
their kids, and they are sharing their experiences, ideas and even resources
online for free (well most of them). God bless these wonderful mothers!
And that’s how I got started in my tot school journey.
I have a lot to learn about Tot schooling so this will be a lesson for both
Mika and Mummy and Abah.
This is what we've done for our 1st week of Tot School. The theme was Colour and Shapes :)
We did some shapes peg puzzle.
Transfering of sponge shapes using tongs. Mika didn't like this though, he tried to use the tongs like a spoon to scoop the sponge. Manage to transfer 2 pieces and he got bored. I cut out the sponge shapes from a computer sponge protector I found in my office :)
We did a lot of water transfering exercise because Mika enjoyed this very much!
Shapes sensory bin.
As you can see Mika LOVE his shapes sensory bin, checkout the drool omg!
What's inside, let's take a peek!
Transfering of colourful connecting balls using spoon.
He enjoyed this as well :)
Again with shapes from his sensory bin.
Mika loves building block and I got him a Gigo Junior Engineer set to practise his assembling skills and creativity.
Kept hammering everything!
So that was our first attempt at tot school. We are now on week 3: Animal theme since Mika's Abah is planning to take him to the zoo this weekend, if the weather permits hopefully. Week 2 was free and easy as I was busy and didn't have enough time to prepare materials for what was suppose to be 'My Body' theme week.
I've noticed a difference in Mika's learning progress as well since we now have a more structured learning approach. Will share more on his progress.
Bye for now :D
