Since I started doing TOT school with Mika there's been some up moments and down moments in our 'playtime'. Of late there's more down moments than up and it has not even been a month!
Lately it seems like Mika is more interested in destroying his lesson materials. He will rip, fold or throw the flashcards or puzzles inthe air and laugh happily. He also prefers stacking up his books and used it as a stool to reach for stuffs on the high shelves! He enjoys screaming, jumping, climbing tables and shelves and making a mess out of everything.
It drives me up the wall because it made it seem like all the things I’ve prepared for our tot school is pointless. And most of the time I’m busy tidying his lesson materials than doing the actual lessonitself because he refuse to let me show him how to do some of the exercises, ended up unsure of what to do and would start throwing things around – happily.
I kept telling myself that this is okay as long as Mika enjoy his playtime and this ‘mess’ is all part of the lesson. I have to tell this to myself several times in each session otherwise I will go crazy! Yes I am a control freak haha!
It does feel tiring and frustrating but I kept going at it because my sister in law told me that even though it may seem like they are not paying attention when we are trying to teach them something but somehow they can still absorbed the lesson.
“What? Are you kidding me?!”
Yes I find it hard to believe at first, but since she raised 2 boys before me, I decided to just go with it.
And TODAY my faith is restored and my motivation renewed! We took Mika to see the paediatrician today because he is currently down with flu and fever. He was chirpy and bubbly despite the flu bug, I guess he’s always happy whenever we take him out of the house anyway. So while the paed was doing his check-ups on Mika, we distracted him with some toys from the paed’s office. He was happily stacking the toy and yells “tadaa!” everytime he completed it and he even started counting by pointing to the toys and although it wasn't pronounced perfectly but it was perfect to mummy's ears! The paed was surprised and said compared to other kids he met at Mika's age, Mika is more advanced. And that Mika is quite a tall build for his age.
I paused a moment and thought this doctor must not go out much because a friend told me that her friend’s toddler in Singapore or in KL whose kids are about the same age with my Mika, are already talking in perfect sentences and are very well-mannered too! And from all the blogs I've been reading, it seems younger toddlers than Mika's did a lot of amazing things expecially with their tot tray! I hesitated...
But I snapped out of it and decided to take it in! I mean how many of these kids have I met in real life anyway. There are many amazing toddler out there and Mika could be one too (typical mother right)So anyway, YES! I take all the good praises the paed said about my son. I was so happy and I think I muttered something like I’m an obsessed mother who practiced montessori teaching every night. My husband gave me a funny look. Mika said 'babai', flykiss and "ank you" to the paed and his assistant.
And to top it off, when it was time for Mika to head back home with Abah and Mummy back to office, Mika kissed mummy on the lips and he said"I voo you" (means I love you). Well okay he didn’t do it on his own, I asked him to which he never like to do but he did today and it made mummy even happier!
I love you too my darling boy! Mummy drove to the office with teary eye and faith restored in out tot school practice :D
By the way, this is the kind of mess that I have to deal with every night in the last 2 weeks but it's totally worth it :)
I think Mika wanted to attempt a somersault! |
His infamous sourpuss face. And he has a habit of lying down on the floor whenever he doesn't get what he wants *sigh* |
